VAT Returns Service

VAT Returns Explained

A Value Added Tax Return (VAT Return) calculates how much VAT a company should pay or expect to recover from HMRC. VAT is a consumption tax on goods and services that is levied at each point of the supply chain where value is added, from the initial production to point of sale.

Your business must register for VAT if your VAT taxable turnover exceeds the VAT threshold which was £85,000 before 1st April 2024 and is £90,000 after 1st April 2024.

In most cases, VAT Returns and accompanying payments must be made quarterly to HMRC. When starting and running a business, it’s important to understand the different taxes that may apply to you.

Here at, our dedicated team of chartered accountants have been helping businesses with their VAT Returns for over ten years. We’re partners of leading accountancy software providers including Xero, FreeAgent, Link My Books, A2X and Dext.

Whatever your accountancy needs, big or small, we’re here to help.

The benefits of outsourced VAT returns services

By choosing us to handle your VAT Returns, you’ll be choosing a team of professionals who are well-versed in UK tax laws and regulations, ensuring that your returns are accurate and compliant.

Eliminating errors

If you file a late VAT Return (including nil payments), you can risk incurring penalty points. For each return that is submitted late, you will receive a penalty point until the penalty point threshold is met.

If the threshold is met, you’ll receive a £200 penalty. You will also incur a further £200 penalty for each subsequent late submissions while you’re at the threshold.

In addition to this, HMRC will charge you late payment interest on any overdue VAT payments. The late payment interest is charged on the amount you owe from the first day payment is overdue, to the day you pay it in full.

Choosing to partner with an accountancy practice like ours can help you avoid costly errors, penalties and interest charges that may arise from incorrect or late filings.

Save yourself time

If you choose to handle VAT Returns yourself, like any accountancy process, it can be time-consuming and requires careful attention to detail to be compliant with regulations.

By outsourcing your VAT Returns, you will be saving time and resources that would otherwise be spent on training yourself/inhouse staff on how to navigate what can be complex VAT rules and regulations.

Peace of mind

We understand that owning and running a business can be complex and presents many challenges. Having us on your side to help manage the accounting aspect of your business, including the correct filing of VAT Returns, means having one less thing to worry about.

You’ll get peace of mind that all the ‘i’s are dotted, the ‘t’s’ are crossed and importantly, as an FCSA accredited member, that all compliance requirements are met.

Identify all opportunities

We will be able to identify any opportunities and VAT schemes that may help your business save money. With lots of things to think about when running a business, it can be easy to miss opportunities. We are experts when it comes to all-things accounting, and we can ensure that everything you’re entitled to, you will receive. The best part is that you won’t have to worry about your VAT Returns being noncompliant.
